A note on chronology: Prior to the 2003 competition, the Photographer of the Year award was given for work done in the previous year, for example, the 2000 TV Regional Photographer of the year was the highest ranking regional photographer for work done in 1999. Beginning in 2003, the award was given the following year, but named for the year in which the work was completed. Thus, in the 2003 archives of News Photographer, Regional Photographers of the Year for 2001 and 2002 were named (announced in 2003, for work done in 2000 and 2001, respectively), and the 2003 Regional Photographer of the Year was named in 2004. Winners from 2003 and onward can be found on the TV Quarterly Contest Page.
