Contest Judges Wrestle with Ethics of Winning Image

Four out of the five judges of the NPPA Best of Photojournalism Contest voted Mike Urban's photograph as their choice for first place in domestic news. The one vote against it was from a judge who thought another photo was better journalistically. The four-to-five vote carried and the photo was given the award. The discussions that followed were extremely intense, respectful and soul-searching. There was never -- not for a second -- any discord. In a very sincere effort to do the right thing we all learned something from each other.

As chair of the NPPA BOP committee I agree with NPPA's stand on this issue.

The photographer's and judges' comments regarding the selection of this photo can be found at Poynter.org.
