The NPPA Television Quarterly Clip Contest recognizes outstanding work performed by NPPA members on a quarterly basis and is open to all active and currently paid members of the National Press Photographers Association. It is a contest by photographers for photographers. Entries are judged by a panel of your peers.
Big changes are afoot! Beginning in 2009, the NPPA Television Quarterly Clip Contest will be switching to a new judging framework that is designed to promote more equal competition than we’ve had in the past. Entrant pools are now based on physical geography, station merit and a photojournalist’s individual merit, rather than geography alone. Check out the new Rules, and get ready!
How to Enter
For now, though, entry is still under the old framework. To enter,
- Read the current rules.
- Make sure you are qualified to enter clips for the quarter by checking the expiration date on your membership card.
- Complete the entry form. Tapes received without the entry form or with incomplete entry forms will not be judged and will be disqualified. Please use the on-line form and refrain from using the old handwritten one. The on-line form only compiles your information into a printable form, it does not register with anyone in the National Office.
- Dub your stories.
- Entries should be submitted with mixed audio in one of the following video formats (please see the preferred formats on the regional chair page):
- DVC Pro
- Betacam SP or SX
- DVCam
- DVD
The NPPA TVQCC Chairs will take no responsibility for the audio quality of entries submitted without mixed audio. Please check your entries for audio and video dropouts before sending.
- Dub only the story. Eliminate anchor lead-ins, tags and mentions of your name. If your name is mentioned in the story, kill the audio or video mention of your name. Note such cuts on the reverse side of your entry form (i.e. "Audio clips at the end to eliminate name."). You do not need to eliminate station sigouts.
- Dub your stories onto the tape in category order: spot news, general news, 48 hour feature and in-depth.
- Leave 30 seconds of black on the front of the tape and five seconds between stories.
- Entries are to be submitted to the Regional Chair by the 15th day of the month, following the conclusion of each quarter. For example, entries from First Quarter 2006 must be postmarked on or before April 15th, 2006.
- Individual entrants should include all stories on one videotape or DVD unless compiling. Labels must include your name, station name, NPPA membership number, region number and the quarter being entered.
- Multiple entrants from one station should compile their entries together (one tape or DVD for each category). Labels should include the station call letters, the quarter being entered, the region number, and the category being entered. Compilation entries should also include the name of a station contact and his/her phone number and e-mail.
- Compilation tapes: If there is more than one person from your station entering, please compile your entries. Put all the spot news on one tape, all the general news on another, etc. Enclose a compilation listing sheet with each tape.
- Send tapes to the appropriate regional contest chair for judging. Check the NPPA Web site for a list of judging sites. Tapes sent to the wrong chair will not be forwarded.
- If you want your tape returned, you must enclose a note saying so along with a pre-addressed label. Scoring sheets will be returned in all cases. Tapes of the first place winners will not be returned. It takes time and money to send tapes back so if you don't need the tape back, don't request it.
- Contact your regional or national contest chair if you have any questions.
