We have a student chapter of NPPA at Point Park University, a private school in Pittsburgh, PA that has a great school of communication with broadcasting and photojournalism majors. I am the vice president of this student chapter, and I'm coming to these forums to ask for ideas. Few photoj students and no video students seem to want to put forth effort (or at least the $65) to be part of this professional organization.
In the past, our NPPA group has not been terribly exciting -- with no events, personal or professional development opportunities planned. We need to come up with at least one event this semester to make these students pay attention.
We're looking at in-house clip contests, visiting newsrooms, photo exhibits around town, using a campus TV channel to broadcast Stills (the audio is the university's student radio station anyway, no real visuals), inviting local photographers to speak and do portfolio reviews. Also, I suppose doing some really aggressive advertising was mentioned. For instance -- "All you goofs went out to shoot the G20 recently. You felt so cool hanging out with the anarchists and taking pictures of John Oliver, but why aren't you part of the professional organization that EVERY PROFESSIONAL is a member of?" (Less scathing and more funny, though.)
Has anyone here put on an event that college kids loved? We need one good social event that's underage-friendly, and appeals to Stills and Video both.
I really appreciate your answers. Thanks!
Iva
