NPPA Announces Local Programs For 2005 Flying Short Course

DURHAM, NC (September 22, 2005) – It's a little more than one week now until the 2005 NPPA Flying Short Course lands in Boston, Austin, and Eugene with two days of career-enhancing workshops and inspiring speakers from the traveling national faculty as well as local and regional speakers in each city. Local FSC organizers have announced the lineups of local speakers and workshops for each of the three stops, and in Austin two events have been added to the program in reaction to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"If you haven't already registered, it's time to do it now," said NPPA's Flying Short Course chairperson Timothy "T.C." Baker. "This year's faculty is a great lineup of speakers, and the local programs at each stop are going to be outstanding." Online registration is available, as well as the schedules for the programs at each stop, at www.flyingshortcourse.org. Online registration is available through Monday, September 26, 2005.

This year the national traveling faculty includes NPPA Newspaper Photographer of the Year Jim Gehrz of the Minneapolis Star Tribune; 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice of the San Francisco Chronicle; Bill Marr, an associate editor of National Geographic magazine; two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Michael Williamson of The Washington Post; freelance photojournalist and editor Dave Einsel; and Brian Storm, president of MediaStorm.

(See John Gross's recent video story on Jim Gehrz here.)

At each Flying Short Course stop this year there will be a print auction to benefit photojournalists displaced by Hurricane Katrina. To donate a print to the auction or to learn more about it, contact Baker at fsc@nppa.org.

The Austin stop of the Flying Short course has added two programs related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. On Saturday evening there will be a panel discussion of photojournalists who covered Hurricane Katrina including Doug Parker, director of photography at The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, LA; Ted Jackson, a staff photographer for The Times-Picayune; Jake Nielson, a freelancer shooting for Agence France-Presse; and Eric Gay, a staff photographer for the Associated Press.

On Sunday morning Barbara Monseu, vice president of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, will talk about covering traumatic events and how it impacts journalists and how they can protect and take care of themselves.

NPPA's Flying Short Course is sponsored by Canon and Nikon, and is graciously hosted by Boston University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Oregon at Eugene.

The Flying Short Course kicks off this year at Boston University in Boston, MA, on Friday September 30 and Saturday October 1. The national traveling program is on Friday and the local/regional program on Saturday.

The second stop in Austin, TX, at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism on Saturday October 1 and Sunday October 2, has the national traveling program making their presentations on Saturday and the local/regional program on Sunday.

The third and final stop in Eugene, OR, at the University of Oregon at Eugene's School of Journalism and Communication on Saturday October 1 and Sunday October 2, has the local/regional program making their presentations and workshops on Saturday and the national traveling program on Sunday.

In Boston on the first stop, a partial list of local/regional presentations includes: "Digital workflow at home and on the road," by Rich Messina of The Hartford Courant; "Wires and Agencies Today," by Brian Snyder of Reuters and Darren McCollester of Getty Images; "Successful business practices for freelance photographers," by Jim Sulley, the director of photography for Newscast USA in New York City; "Successful daily journalism in your own backyard," by John Freidah of The Providence Journal; and many more speakers along with portfolio reviews each night and the print auction. A full list of the local/regional program lineups plus any last-minute additions is online here.

In Austin on the second stop, a partial list of local/regional presentations includes: "On Deadline - In the Middle of Nowhere," by Matt Rourke of the Austin American-Statesman (Rourke just finished covering Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans); "Multimedia Productions," by Jorge Sanhueza-Lyon of the Austin American-Statesman; "Freelancing in the 21st Century," by NPPA president Alicia Wagner Calzada, a staff photojournalist for Rumbo in San Antonio, TX; "I'm not a lawyer - Photo Rights," also by Calzada; plus more speakers and workshops and the print auction on Saturday night. A full list of the local/regional program lineups plus any last-minute additions is online here.

(Editor's note: Austin FSC organizers are also currently working to put together a speaker or workshop on "Journalism and Trauma," in light of recent events, and a panel discussion on Hurricane Katrina's coverage – but these are still in the developing stages and more information on these will be announced shortly).

In Eugene on the last stop, a partial list of local/regional presentations includes: "Gadgets! Gadgets! Gadgets!: All the geek things that can make your job easier," by Jeff Gritchen of the Long Beach Press Telegram; "Camera Workshop: Getting The Most From Your Digital Gear," by Canon USA representative Amy Kawadler and Nikon representative Mike Phillips; "Building the Perfect Beast: Portfolios from Start to Finish," by Kevin German of the Sacramento Bee; "Being a Visual Advocate in the Newsroom," by Russ Kendall of The Bellingham Herald; "Sights and Sounds: Combining audio and still images to tell stories," by Dai Sugano and Richard Hernandez of The San Jose Mercury News; plus many more speakers along with portfolio reviews each night, the print auction, and a student "shoot-off." A full list of the local/regional program lineups plus any last-minute additions is online here.

The format of this year's Flying Short Course reflects NPPA's ongoing commitment to improving its educational programs and responding to feedback from its members. NPPA has reorganized some of the fundamental elements of the organization's historic Flying Short Course educational program, including moving the event out of hotel venues and back into an educational setting in the journalism departments of colleges and universities, and expanding the program in each city from one to two days to include local/regional programs of merit, giving attendees a greater value for their registration dollar.
