2007 2nd Quarter BUP Results

Feature and Multiple-page entries were were judged by National Geographic magazine senior photography editors Gail Fisher and Ken Geiger.

NEWS:

1st: The Palm Beach Post, May 30, 2007
"Buried in her favorite dress”
Mark Edelson, Uma Sanghvi, Jan Tuckwood, Margaret McKenzie and Price Patton.
Judges’ comments: Great set of pictures used very nicely with an elegant use of type. The lead photo is very emotional and used accordingly. The rest of the page builds from that picture.

2nd: The St. Petersburg Times, April 18, 2007
"Seeking answers"
Scott DeMusey and Stephanie Sweargin.
Judges’ comments: The best of the VT aftermath pages. Good use of a news photo with limited use of type. This page really grabs the reader.

3rd: The Los Angeles Times, May 13, 2007
"Siblings torn apart by gunfire"
Robert St. John, Paul Wilson and Francine Orr.
Judges’ comments: Good set of local photos on a hard subject to cover. Photos are used for impact and gracefully tell the story.

Honorable mentions:

The Virginian Pilot, April 21, 2007
"The call to reflect"
Team.
Judges’ comments: Different way to tell the VT story. Good concept of Virginian's showing the VT colors. Executed very nicely. I like the front page and the use of (lack of) type. The page shows you everything you need to see and feel about the VT story.

The Rocky Mountain News, June 23, 2007
“The war, in his own words”
Javier Manzano, Dean Krakel and Steve Miller.
Judges’ comments: Very good display and crop on the lead picture. The soldier framed through the boots is a very eye-catching photograph.

The Los Angeles Times, May 12, 2007
"Disabled but able to go distance"
Robert St. John, Alan Hagman and Don Bartletti.
Judges’ comments: Good display with very simple story-telling photographs.

The Houston Chronicle, April 17, 2007
"Deadliest U.S. Shooting"
Team.
Judges’ comments: Very good display and photo usage on the VT shootings. The 3 secondary photos that frame the headline make this package work. The page had lots of information, but the photographs tell the story.

The Palm Beach Post, April 28, 2007
“Bank robbery suspects shot”
Team.
Judges’ comments: This page uses 3 smaller photographs to tell the story when 1 by itself didn't. It is a quick read for the readers and gives the page a different look.

FEATURE:

Judges’ overall assessment: Surprised at how fast the single page feature category was judged. It was very easy to weed out the weak images and what remained in the top wasn’t much.

1st: The Los Angeles Times, June 3, 2007
“Paradise posh”
Richard Derk, Bob Chamberlain and Tim Hubbard.
Judge’s comments: Nice framing with interesting perspective, took thinking on part of photographer. Simple graphic and well-done page that jumps out at reader and wants you to open the paper and look inside.

2nd: The Commercial Appeal, April 29, 2007
“The last best hope”
John Sale, Kim Coleman and Karen Focht.
Judge’s comments: Good use of photography, touching image with emotional impact. Nice connection between the dominant and secondary image. Graphic, simple, clean layout.

3rd: The Palm Beach Post, June 29, 2007
“Beauty’s all around us”
Mark Edelson, Nicole Neal, Rachel Sauer and Ebony Watkins with staff photography.
Judge’s comments: Interesting use of photography and took some chances with the approach using several photographs the same size. It worked. Left hand column with the cutout hurt the page, however. It should have been eliminated or used at the bottom of the page as not to compete with main feature.

Honorable mentions:

The Palm Beach Post, June 17, 2007
“A good man”
Damon Higgins, Mark Edelson, Nicole Neal and Jenna Lehtola.

The Los Angeles Times, June 10, 2007
“Woody Allen”
Hal Wells and Carol Kauffman.

The Oregonian, June 3, 2007
“2007 Rose Festival Guide”
Randy Rasmussen.

The Virginian-Pilot, May 20, 2007
“Hampton Roads from the air”
Team.

PICTURE PAGE:

1st: The Palm Beach Post, May 13, 2007
"Think about the good stuff"
Mark Edelson, J. Gwendolynne Berry, Jan Tuckwood, Rebecca Vaughan and Tonya Favata.
Judges’ comments: Good double truck display for good story-telling photographs. The grouping of the 4 photos on the right hand page really worked together to take you into the hospital life.

2nd: The Denver Post, June 24, 2007
"Through a lens, brightly"
Tim Rasmussen, John Sunderland, Ken Lyons, Eric Lutens and Linda Shapley with staff photographs.
Judges’ comments: In the digital photography era, this page was a great idea to show photography as art with toy cameras. It's all about seeing the world. This page shows the readers how the Denver Post photographers see and feel.

3rd: The Palm Beach Post, June 28, 2007
"The Juno Beach Pier"
Mark Edelson and Brian Lehmann.
Judges’ comments: This page was a very good idea. Take an ordinary place that readers go and show them a different side of it. I like the moody photographs, the time of day it was shot and how the page was designed for the readers.

Honorable mentions:

The Virginian-Pilot, May 24, 2007
"Ike Strike Group"
Team.
Judges’ comments: This page has a lot going on. We see the emotion of the sailor's return and several details photographs that put the reader at the scene. Good use of detail photos as well as display photos.

The Oregonian, May 27, 2007
"Where the hip folks meet"
Michael Lloyd, Benjamin Brink, Bruce Ely, Nancy Burke, Patty Reksten
Judges’ comments: Story-telling photographs with a nice mix of details designed over a double truck bring this page to life for readers. The photographs have a different point of view and give the reader the feeling of "where the hip folks meet".

The Albuquerque Tribune, May 29, 2007
“Saying goodbye”
Jeff Alexander and Don Renfroe with A.P. photos.
Judges’ comments: Nice display of photographs on a single topic. Simple design and the photographs have impact.

The Palm Beach Post, April 18, 2007
"Celebrating a Florida original"
Mark Edelson and Meghan McCarthy.
Judges’ comments: This picture page across 2 facing tab pages does a good job of telling the story of cracker horses. I like the use of the small photos at the top of the page.

The Houston Chronicle, April 17, 2007
"Massacre on campus"
Team.
Judges’ comments: The best of the picture pages submitted on the VT massacre.

SPORTS:

1st: The Oregonian, June 25, 2007
"Reign-Makers"
Ross Hamilton, Claudia Howell and Mike Zacchino.
Judges’ comments: Strong page with lots of impact. Photo has nice emotion and the rest of the page plays from that strength. Photo’s cropped nicely and used the correct size.

2nd: The Palm Beach Post, April 1, 2007
"Faces of the Final Four"
Mark Edelson and Kelly Winter with wire photos.
Judges’ comments: We liked the selection of photos and the way they were used: Very nice design technique to show the emotion of the Final Four Basketball Tournament. The faces capture the emotion and when played against the large display photo this page communicates basketball.

3rd: Seattle Post-Intelligencer, April 16, 2007
"Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson Day”
Rob Summer, Andy Rogers and Todd Dybass.
Judges’ comments: Unique way to illustrate the celebration of Jackie Robinson Day in major league baseball. Large impact photo plays nicely against the small photo layout at the bottom of the page. The 42 theme is nicely carried out on the page. Nice crops and selection of photos.

Honorable mentions:

The Oregonian, June 29, 2007
"The whole town in Oden's hands"
Bruce Ely and Mike Zacchino.
Judges’ comments: Great reader interaction page. Every person that saw this page put his or her hand on Oden's hand. Good design and great idea to showcase your newest basketball draft pick.

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, May 25, 2007
"Todo por la Pelota"
Mark Edelson with Associated Press photos.
Judges’ comments: Good themed picture page with a very nice dominant photo. Good selection of photos to show keeping your eye on the ball.

The Palm Beach Post / La Palma, April 20, 2007
"Masacre del Viernes 13"
Mark Edelson and Allen Eyestone.
Judges’ comments: Good story-telling photos. Nice contrast in size and display. Good emotion and use of type.

The Dallas Morning News, June 24, 2007
“Going yard”
Brad Loper, Chris Wilkins, Louis Deluca and Cindy Smith.
Judges’ comments: Nice set of staff produced photos used well and nicely designed.

MULTIPLE PAGE:

1st: The Commercial Appeal, April 29, 2007
“The last best hope”
John Sale, Kim Coleman and Karen Focht.
Judge’s comments: Main strength is tight edit of the photography and nicely designed. Strongest photos were edited as dominant. Nice pacing, visually loaded with emotional impact.

2nd: The Concord Monitor, June 9-12, 2007
“How time slips away”
Dan Habib, Preston Gannaway, Vanessa Valdes, Dan Barrick and Clay McCuistion.
Judge’s comments: Interesting concept and not the kind of topic that is naturally going to draw you in emotionally. We applaud the photographer who documented some nicely found moments. Too many images on the page though brought it down. And, difficult lighting situation to pull off in color, which seemed to get in the way in several of the photographs.

3rd: The St. Petersburg Times, April 22, 2007
“Growing together”
Bruce Moyer, Justin Cook and Paul Alexander.
Judge’s comments: Solid photography, but felt a tighter edit would have made the layout stronger. Strong page one presentation with emotional impact. There were redundancies in the photography that brought the overall package down.

Honorable Mentions:

The Dallas Morning News, May 13, 2007
“Wind, water and fire”
Brad Loper and Cindy Smith with wire photos.
Judge’s comments: Good use of photography, different and unique concept. Not true sense of photo editing from raw files as they were wire photography images, but good use of the images selected.

The Los Angeles Times, June 10, 2007
“Louisiana”
Richard Derk, Kathy Pyon, Mark Bosten and Tim Hubbard.
Judge’s comments: Cover photograph very strong as well as the dominant image inside. But, two photos on the bottom right hand page should have been eliminated which brought down the overall quality of the package.

The Los Angeles Times, April 27, 2007
“Family’s painful split decision”
Mary Cooney, Michael Robinson Chavez and Kelli Sullivan.
Judge’s comments: Touching page one photograph beautifully executed in color. But, unfortunately, a couple redundant, informational photos brought the overall quality of the presentation down. Also judges felt the two dominant images competed with one another for the viewer’s attention.
