NYC Panel Discussion To Address Trauma And Journalists
NEW YORK, NY (December 1, 2008) – A panel discussion about the impact of trauma experiences on professional photographers, journalists, and social workers sponsored by the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma will take place Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at the Columbia University School of Social Work in New York City.
The discussion will focus on how journalists and photographers function mainly to inform and interpret rather than to help victims directly, but in doing so experience pitfalls and ethical challenges that are unlike those facing the social workers, rescue workers, or therapists who are in the helping professions and deal directly with victims. Part of the discussion includes how documentary journalism can inspire compassion and understanding for victims, which in itself can open pathways for assistance.
The panel includes DART Center executive director Bruce Shapiro; Grace Christ, a professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work; Donna DeCesare, a photojournalist who is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism; and Jack Saul, an assistant professor of clinical population and family health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project joins the DART Center and Columbia University in sponsoring the free event, which is open to the public.
The panel discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. EST at Columbia University's School of Social Work, 1255 Amsterdam Ave. (between 121st and 122nd Streets), Concourse Level, Room C03, in Manhattan.
