AOL Cutting 10 Percent Of Workforce

NEW YORK, NY (January 29, 2009) – AOL director of photography Cathaleen Curtiss told News Photographer magazine that so far her department is not a part of the 10 percent workforce cut announced yesterday by Time Warner's Internet unit.

A continuing decline in online advertising has forced AOL to cut about 700 jobs, AOL chief executive Randy Falco wrote in an internal memo obtained by the Financial Times.

"Online marketers have tightened their ad buying dollars across the board, reducing their spend by hundreds of millions of dollars," Falco wrote. "We will continue throughout the year to carefully and thoroughly review all our products and services to make sure every one fully supports our strategy and has the potential for growth."

AOL's picture editors are based in the company's New York and Virginia offices, as well as some who work from remote locations. Curtiss said that photography and online pictures continue to be highly-popular topics for AOL users and the work the AOL photography staff creates are some of the most visited pages by users.
