Hotline Set Up For Journalists Covering Inauguration
WASHINGTON, DC (January 28, 2009) – The Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press (RCFP) has set up a hotline providing assistance to journalists who may be arrested or ticketed during the presidential inauguration this week.
The 24-hour number for journalists who encounter legal problems is +1.703.807.2100, and complete details are online here.
As with this summer's political conventions, the RCFP has provided a flier for journalists which has all of the necessary information on it.
An important point from the flier:
If a camera, film, videotape, memory card or other newsgathering materials have been confiscated, be sure to politely inform police of any steps necessary to preserve that material. Most police officials know that they cannot lawfully destroy or otherwise ruin such materials.
The RCFP recommends that journalists print out the flier and carry it with them so that they will have handy access to the information if there is an incident.
