Denver Post Cuts Senior Editors
DENVER, CO (February 20, 2009) – In a cost-cutting move the Denver Post has laid off six newsroom managers.
Editor Greg Moore told the Post staff in a memo that the layoffs were "forced by budget cuts that I have to make."
The layoffs included managing editor of news Gary Clark. managing editor of online news Mark Cardwell; assistant managing editor of technology Erik Strom; creative director Ingrid Muller; assistant city editor Cynthia Pasquale; and online special projects editor Stephen Keating.
The newspaper has had layoffs before, but this is the first time cuts have taken place this high in the newsroom management staff.
"I think you all know the financial challenges facing this industry and this newspaper. Today's action should drive it all home for you," Moore wrote in his staff memo.
MediaNews Group, the paper's owner, is negotiating with union-covered Post employees for wage and benefit concessions totaling $2 million. MediaNews' publisher and CEO, William Dean Singleton, is also chairman of the board of the Associated Press. The union negotiations are also about employees who work for The Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Newspaper Agency (the joint operating agreement that publishes both the Post and the Rocky).
E.W. Scripps, owners of The Rocky Mountain News, had put the Rocky up for sale and said the paper might close without a buyer in the face of mounting financial loses.
Employees at Scripps papers learned from an internal company memo on Wednesday about a companywide pay and benefit cut plan that freezes their wages, pensions, and 401K matching funds, but the company says the move will not effect Scripps employees at the Rocky.
