Emilio Morenatti: POYi's Newspaper Photographer Of The Year
COLUMBIA, MO (February 23, 2009) – Emilio Morenatti of the Associated Press has been picked as the University of Missouri School of Journalism's 66th annual Pictures of the Year International Newspaper Photographer of the Year during the first week of POYi judging at the contest in Columbia, contest director Rick Shaw announced.
Morenatti is a photojournalist working in Pakistan for AP, and he also covers central Asia.
Other winners in the Newspaper Photographer of the Year category were second place finisher David Guttenfelder, also from AP; third place winner Andrea Bruce, from The Washington Post, and Award of Excellence winners Rick Loomis from the Los Angeles Times; Nicole Fruge from the San Antonio Express-News; and Michael Robinson Chavez, also from the Los Angeles Times.
Judging POYi continues for two more weeks, Shaw said, and a complete list of winners will be released at that time. The Magazine Photographer of the Year and the Best Photography Book Award will be picked this coming Friday, and the following week the Newspaper and Magazine Editing and Multimedia categories will be judged.
