Boston: Herald Cuts 24 Jobs, Globe Layoff Includes Photographers
BOSTON, MA (March 30, 2009) – The Boston Herald announced 24 layoffs on Friday, about a 6 percent reduction in the newspaper's workforce, as 13 voluntary and 11 involuntary cuts were made to the staff.
The cuts were primarily on the Herald's business side, but one photographer did take a voluntary buyout from the newsroom.
The Herald offered buyouts to employees on February 27 and said it needed to trim 20 positions. There were 13 volunteers and the other cuts were made to meet the quota.
Across town the Boston Globe is facing staff cutbacks as the newspaper's parent company, The New York Times, last week ordered 100 layoffs and a 5 percent pay cut for remaining employees across the corporation.
The Boston Herald, reporting on the Globe's layoffs, said that five part-time Globe photographers were let go, including Evan Richman, David Kammerman, Justine Hunt, John Bohn, and Michele McDonald.
