Columbus Dispatch Cuts 45 From Newsroom

COLUMBUS, OH (March 3, 2009) – Workers at The Dispatch in Columbus learned Monday that 45 newsroom jobs are being cut effective April 3.

"We avoided staff reductions as long as possible long after many other news organizations took such action," Dispatch publisher John F. Wolfe told the staff.

The downsizing will speed up a reorganization of the newsroom, editor Benjamin Marrison said, moving more of the Dispatch's emphasis to the Web and focusing even more on local news, local sports, and local enterprise reporting.

Wolfe said the paper's readership had remained "strong and stable" but that "market forces" and advertising revenue's constant slide downwards was to blame for the need to eliminate staff. The publisher said advertising revenue was the primary culprit, traditionally providing "the majority of funds needed to pay salaries and buy paper and ink."
