Judges Are Selecting Best Of Photojournalism 2009 Web, Multimedia Winners

 

 

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 25, 2009) – Judges in the Web site and Multimedia categories have been busy this week picking winners from the Audio Slideshow and Web Video entries in the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism 2009 competition at the contest's host site, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

The results in the Audio Slideshow categories and the Web Video categories fall into three classes:

In the News Audio Slideshow category, INDE first place is Chris Carmichael Multimedia for "Under One Roof."

In the News Audio Slideshow category, UNDE first place is The Grand Rapids Press for "A Family Foreclosed," second is The News & Advance for "King of Kindergarten," and third is the San Jose Mercury News for "Savoring Obama's Victory."

In the News Audio Slideshow category, OVER first place is the Los Angeles Times for "A Life-Changing Vote," second is the San Antonio Express-News for "Carrying On," and third is Washingtonpost.com for "Waiting for History."

In the Sports Audio Slideshow category, INDE first place is freelancer Drew Anger for "Minus The Action." Second place is Chico Sanchez for "Mexican Lucha Libre: The fight between good and evil," and third place is Sanchez for "Charreria."

In the Sports Audio Slideshow category, UNDE first place is The Monitor for "Weslaco Bull Riders." Second place is The News & Advance for "Raging Bulls," and third place is the Daily Republic for "Faith and Competition." Honorable mentions were awarded to The News & Advance for "Lifeless Dreams," and the Cleveland Plain Dealer for "Backyard Baseball."

In the Sports Audio Slideshow category, OVER first place is National Public Radio for "Crafting China's Future Champions." Second place is Washingtonpost.com for "Muskrat Queens," and third place is The Dallas Morning News for "The Last Dallas Cowboys Game At Texas Stadium." Honorable mentions were awarded to Washingtonpost.com for "In Racetrack's Backstretch, Another World," and to The New York Times for "Plays Hard, Works Harder."

In the Natural Disaster Audio Slideshow category, first place is The Dallas Morning News for "Recovering From Hurricane Ike: Sabine Pass, Texas," by photographer Courtney Perry and multimedia producer David Guzman.

In the News Video category, UNDE first place is the San Jose Mercury News for "Muffie and Karen's Wedding Day." Second place is The Spokesman-Review for "Warming The Homeless."

In the News Video category, OVER first place is National Public Radio for "Marines Try To Improve Image In Taliban Stronghold." Second place is Getty Images for "Worn Out On Wall Street," and third place is Washingtonpost.com for "U Street Jubilation." Honorable mentions were awarded to the Star Tribune for "Bridge Reconnects A City," STLtoday.com for "Boy Scouts Remember," and the San Antonio Express-News for "Alamo Dust-offs.

This year 3,700 journalists from 147 countries submitted 53,000 still images, video, and Web entries in the 2009 Best Of Photojournalism competition.

Winning Web entries are being posted online as the judging progresses throughout this week.

Web category judges this year are Michelle Maitais, the editorial broadcast manager for the Los Angeles Times; Margarita Corporan, a senior photo editor for US Weekly magazine; Shannon Perich, the associate curator of the Photographic History Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History; Jennifer Crandall, a videojournalist for Washingtonpost.com; Vidisha Priyanka, an audience editor for Tampa Bay Online; and Regina McCombs, a Poynter Institute faculty member. Judging of the Web categories is being coordinated by NPPA Contest Committee member Keith W. Jenkins, a supervising senior producer for National Public Radio.

 

Best Of Photojournalism judging at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the contest's host site, has been coordinated by Thomas Kenniff, who is NPPA's director of sales and contests, and NPPA's executive director Straight, along with Poynter's Kenny Irby and Al Tompkins.

This year's judges for the Best Of Photojournalism still photography categories are Dudley Brooks, the photography director for Ebony/Jet Publishing; 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winner Renée C. Byer of the Sacramento Bee; Amsterdam-based photojournalist Peter Dejong of the Associated Press; and Tim Rasmussen, the assistant managing editor of photography for The Denver Post. California-based freelance sports photojournalist Donald Miralle, who was one of the judges for the first three days of the competition, had to return home for a family emergency. He has been replaced on the judging panel by a substitute judge, 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice. She is a member of NPPA's BOP Contest Committee, and was a BOP judge for the contest last year too.

Boyzell Hosey, director of photography for the St. Petersburg Times, and six members of newspaper's visual staff have stepped forward to serve as volunteers this week at the 2009 Best Of Photojournalism's Still Photography and Web categories judging held at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. "By assisting the judges and the process, they've solved a big problem for us this week," Contest Committee member and former NPPA president Clyde Mueller said from the judging site.

The Best Of Photojournalism 2009 competition and judging is sponsored by Apple's Aperture, Canon, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Ohio University's School of Visual Communication, the St. Petersburg Times, and the National Press Photographers Association.
