Uriel Sinai, National Geographic Magazine, Win POYi Top Honors
COLUMBIA, MO (March 9, 2009) – The three weeks of judging at the University of Missouri's Pictures of the Year International competition have wrapped up and Uriel Sinai of Getty Images has been named the contest's Magazine Photographer of the Year.
Earlier in the competition, Emilio Morenatti from the Associated Press was picked as the Newspaper Photographer of the Year, and National Geographic magazine won the Angus McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing award.
Contest director Rick Shaw said Morenatti's portfolio "demonstrated a stunning documentation of the refugee camps in both Pakistan and Afghanistan, plus coverage of the earthquake in Ziara. Sinai’s portfolio focused on the social impact of human conflict, specifically the post-election violence in Kenya and the war in Georgia."
In a new category, Documentary Project of the Year, the Roanoke Times series "Age Of Uncertainty" was the winner. The essay examined the issues surrounding again and elderly care in Virginia.
National Geographic also won for Best Use of Multimedia for the magazine's online component, and Jakob Carlsen won the World Understanding Award for the long-term project "Untouchables of Asia."
