St. Louis Photographer Lynn T. "Jug" Spence, 71

ST. LOUIS, MO (March 9, 2009) – Photographer Lynn T. "Jug" Spence, 71, died March 6 after suffering a stroke, his former coworkers at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said.

Spence was a photographer at the Post-Dispatch for 35 years, and was probably best known for his 1969 baseball photograph titled "Out, Safe" that showed two baseball umpires each calling a sliding player at a base both out and safe, which was one of the newspaper's most popular reprints.

Post-Dispatch photojournalist J.B. Forbes wrote a remembrance of Spence here. Spence had joined with several other photographers, both current and retired, for a reunion breakfast only a few weeks before his death.

Spence is survived by his wife Mary Ellen; children Andrew, Joseph, and Cynthia; and grandchildren. A memorial service was held March 8 at the Ethical Society of St. Louis.
