WASHINGTON, DC (March 24, 2009) – Alice Gabriner, the former chief photography editor for Time magazine, has been named White House photography editor today by White House official photographer Pete Souza.

Gabriner, an award-winning veteran photography editor, will also be the deputy director of the White House Photography Office, Souza said.

Souza told News Photographer magazine today that Gabriner's deputy White House photography editors, also named today, will be Jennifer Poggi and veteran Washington photojournalist Rick McKay.

Gabriner replaced MaryAnne Golon as the head of photography at Time after Golon departed the magazine in June 2008. Before taking on that role Gabriner edited Time's world section and was the magazine's national picture editor. Before working for Time, Gabriner was deputy director of photography at U.S. News & World Report.

Over the years Gabriner has participated in many of the Time magazine layouts and essays that have won awards in NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism picture editing competition.

Poggi has been a Knight Fellow at Ohio University while on leave of absence from U.S. News & World Report, where she was deputy director of photography.

McKay has been the Cox Newspapers Washington Bureau's national photographer and picture editor for many years. Cox closed the Washington bureau this month. Before Cox, McKay was a staff photographer at USA Today and he's a 1976 graduate of Central Michigan University. He's been an NPPA member since 1976.

In late February the initial members of Souza's White House photography staff were appointed when he hired Chuck Kennedy to be the assistant director of the White House photography office, and Samantha Appleton and Lawrence Jackson to be official White House photographers.
