Souza Photographs Obama's Surprise Baghdad Stop

BAGHDAD (April 7, 2009) – When President Barack Obama made a surprise trip to Baghdad today, landing on Air Force One in Iraq after leaving Turkey, White House official photographer Pete Souza documented the commander in chief meeting with troops at Camp Victory.
A slideshow of Souza's photographs of Obama with soldiers in Iraq, along with a video, has been posted on the Web site www.whitehouse.gov.
All the photographs were edited and transmitted from aboard Air Force One, Souza told News Photographer magazine tonight. He said four other photographers covered the Baghdad visit in the White House travel pool, although not every aspect of it.
The White House said the unannounced trip was to meet with Iraqi leaders and American military commanders to assess security there first-hand, and security was high as the president was on the ground in Iraq for about four hours. The trip to Iraq was announced only after Air Force One was safely on the ground at the Baghdad International Airport.
There is also a separate slideshow of Souza's coverage of Obama's European trip that preceded the Baghdad stop.
Souza has been an NPPA member since 1977.
