Michel du Cille To Keynote At Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference

BELLINGHAM, WA (April 20, 2009) – Michel du Cille, the assistant managing editor for photography at The Washington Post, who is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner and an NPPA member since 1981, will be the keynote speaker at this summer's Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference, NPPA Region 11 director Russ Kendall said today.

Kendall also announced that laid-off visual journalists will be able to attend the Saturday portion of the conference, which includes a catered lunch, for free "in a nod to these difficult times."

"There will be a silent print auction to help cover these costs," Kendall said. "High-quality unmounted photographs donated to the auction will be gratefully accepted."

Held at Western Washington University's Department of Journalism, the conference will take place Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, 2009.

Other speakers scheduled to appear include Region 11 2008 Photographer of the Year Alan Berner of The Seattle Times; Meredith Birkett, a senior multimedia editor for special projects for MSNBC.com; Scott Mc Kiernan, a founding member of ZUMA Press; Wes Pope, a multimedia photojournalist who most recently worked for The Rocky Mountain News; Heidi de Laubenfels, the deputy managing editor for strategy and product development at The Seattle Times; and Jim Seida, a senior multimedia producer for MSNBC.com.

Kendall says that two concurrent, intermediate-to-advanced, day-long workshops will be offered on Friday July 17. One workshop will cover audio slideshows, and the other will focus on shooting video. "These are not 'beginning' workshops," Kendall advises, and space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Registration for Friday's multimedia workshop is $100. The fee for Saturday's speaker series, which includes lunch, is $75. Or you can register for both days for just $150. Students with current student ID can attend Saturday's presentations for a reduced fee of $50.
