DURHAM, NC (April 3, 2009) – Online registration is now available for the National Press Photographers Association's Convergence '09 in Las Vegas, June 6-13, 2009.
Convergence '09 features the Multimedia Immersion Workshop, the Women In Photojournalism Conference, The Edit Foundry, and the Visual Journalism Workshops.
Special hotel rates at the Flamingo will be available for three days before the event and for three days after the event for those who would like to combine Convergence '09 with some vacation time in Las Vegas, NPPA executive director Jim Straight said.
The Multimedia Immersion workshop runs June 6-10. It is an intense five-day, hands-on training experience for visual journalists who are looking to expand and grow their multimedia skillsets. Registration for the Multimedia Immersion workshop is limited to the first 50 people. Equipment for participants to work on is provided by Apple and Canon and will include a choice of the Canon XHA1, Canon 5D Mark II, and Canon HV30. The cameras are also limited and will be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
In addition, Multimedia Immersion Workshop sponsor ThinkTankPhoto will be giving each participant free gear from their product line to use during the Multimedia Immersion Workshop and to take home afterwards.
The Multimedia Immersion workshop will continue to provide a 2:1 student to trainer ratio, and NPPA has brought in the leaders in the field of professional multimedia journalism. The workshop's line-up of teachers includes Rob Rosenthal (of Salt Workshops), Regina McCombs (a faculty member at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies), Scott Anger (of the Los Angeles Times), Eric Maierson (from MediaStorm), Ben de la Cruz (of The Washington Post), Coburn Dukehart (from National Public Radio), Meredith Birkett (from MSNBC), Smiley Pool (from the Houston Chronicle) and Richard Koci Hernandez (from the University of California at Berkeley).
The Women In Photojournalism Conference on June 10 will celebrate the workshop's 20th anniversary, and this year the program will focus on the history of women in photojournalism along with how to survive the challenges of layoffs and the media economy.
The Visual Journalism Workshops will run June 11-13 and focus for three days on valuable, practical, and inspirational ways to improve photojournalists' skills and marketability in the still, video, and multimedia markets. The Visual Journalism Workshops include a list of sessions that range from Basic Storytelling to Interviewing to Narrative to editing and software sessions, business training, and Panoramas, taught by a wide variety of professionals.
