Pulitzer Prizes Announced Later Today
NEW YORK, NY (April 20, 2009) – Today is Pulitzer day.
At 3 p.m. ET this afternoon, the Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists will be announced at a press conference at Columbia University in New York City.
In addition to winners in the traditional categories such as Journalism, Letters, Drama, an Music, this year 14 categories were broadened to include online-only publications that publish only on the Internet, provided they come from U.S. organizations that publish at least weekly.
The photojournalism community is watching today to see who wins the Pulitzer Prizes for Spot News and Feature Photography. Last year's winners were Andrees Latif of Reuters for Breaking News for his photograph of a Japanese videographer mortally wounded during street clashes in Myanmar, and Preston Gannaway for "Remember Me," the story of cancer patient Carolynne St. Pierre that she shot while working for the Concord Monitor.
Also last year, photojournalist Michel du Cille of the Washington Post was a member of the three-person team who won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for exposing the mistreatment of wounded veterans at the U.S. Army's Walter Reed Hospital in Washington.
The photography Pulitzer winners will be posted on the NPPA Web site today as soon as the announcement is made by Pulitzer Prize board administrator Sig Gissler at Columbia.
