David Stephenson Joins Kentucky Kernel
LEXINGTON, KY (May 18, 2009) – Photojournalist David Stephenson has been named as the new photography adviser to the University of Kentucky's student newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel.
Stephenson replaces Jim Winn, who is leaving the position to pursue his own photography business and projects.
Since 1997, Stephenson has been a staff photographer at the Lexington Herald-Leader. He's a four-time winner of the Kentucky Photographer of the Year title, a two-time Regional Photographer of the Year, and a two-time winner of the Kentucky Sports Photographer of the Year honor. He's been an NPPA member since 1991.
In addition to advising student photojournalists at the Kernel, Stephenson intends to freelance his photojournalism and mulitmedia projects to national news outlets, including Time.com
Stephenson's four-year documentary project "A New Dawn" was the cover story of November 2007 issue of News Photographer magazine. The photojournalist told the story of a new Fayette County (KY) drug court by following the life of one of its subjects, Dawn Smith, a Kentucky mother addicted to pain pills. The Lexington Herald-Leader published the work as a six-part series with 18 full inside pages and online, as a six-chapter multimedia gallery with stories and links to resources.
