Chapnick Grant Deadline Is July 15
NEW YORK, NY (June 9, 2009) – The application deadline for this year's Howard Chapnick Grant is July 15, and the application form is now available online from the W. Eugene Smith Fund Web site.
The annual grant of $5,000 USD is not intended to support projects that create photographs, but is to support the ancillary field of photojournalism in the areas of editing, research, education, and management. he Fund's Board of Trustees will give special consideration to project that promote social change or serve significant concerns of photojournalism. The annual award will assist the individuals who wish to follow in the footsteps of this unique leader in the field of photojournalism.
Photographic projects will continue to be funded by the main grant of the Smith Fund, the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography.
The grant was established to honor the memory of the enormous contribution made to photojournalism by the late Howard Chapnick, the president of Black Star photo agency from 1964 through 1989. During his career, which spanned for 50 years, Chapnick discovered, nurtured, and promoted some of the world's most talented photojournalists. Chapnick died in 1996 and his wife Jeanette Chapnick died in 2007. As a couple, the Chapnicks spent much of their lives supporting photojournalists.
