High School, College Students, Win James Alan Cox Scholarships
AUSTIN, TX (June 8, 2009) – The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photographers has named five high school students and three college students as winners of their 2008 scholarships.
The college winners this year are Elizabeth Thomas of Boulder, CO (Still photography); Juan Antonio Elizondo of Austin (Video); and Natasia Gascon of Los Angeles, CA (Video). Each receives a $2,000 scholarship check payable to their school.
The high school student winners are Taylor Cavanaugh of Ocala, FL; Emily Judd of McKinney, TX; Angie Rushing of Georgetown, TX; Camille Williams of Detroit, MI; and Anges Wysowski of Euless, TX. The high school winners receive a Canon Rebel EOS XSI camera with two lenses, memory cards, and an equipment bag.
The foundation was started by the parents and sisters of photojournalist Jim Cox after he was killed in July 2007 when his Channel 3 news helicopter crashed in downtown Phoenix, AZ, after a mid-air collision with ABC 15's news chopper. Also killed in the accident were Channel 3's pilot Scott Bowerbank and ABC 15's photojournalist Rick Krolak and pilot Craig Smith.
The photojournalists' family, parents Alan G. and Barbara Cox and sisters Leslie Cox and Jennifer Cox-Bracksieck, are members of the foundation's board of directors. In memory of their son and brother, who was 37 when he died, the foundation provides financial support to student photographers of high school and college age, including equipment purchases and money to go toward tuition.
