NPPA's Multimedia Immersion Workshop Kicks Off Convergence '09 Week In Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV (June 6, 2009) – The National Press Photographers Association's Multimedia Immersion workshop got started today with a Las Vegas flavor as some of the strip's famous show girls demonstrated a new multimedia equipment bags made by one of the event's sponsors, Think Tank Photo.

After the flashy exhibit, the new Think Tank Photo multimedia bags were given to all of the workshop's student and coaches, and NPPA's five-day, hands-on training seminar at the Flamingo Hotel got down to the business of expanding and growing the students' multimedia skills.

The workshop's focus is on mixing photographs, video, and audio content into multimedia presentations. Over the next five days students will learn how to plan and develop a story, record professional audio, hands-on training on how to use audio and video equipment, training on how to shoot visuals for multimedia use and how to work as a one-man videojournalist.

The NPPA Multimedia Immersion participants will also receive training on how to edit in Final Cut Pro, and how to create graphics and titles and custom-composed music.

During the five-days each student will produce their own finished professional project, from capturing all the content to editing and compressing the final files.

The workshop is co-chiared by Seth Gitner, formerly of The Roanoke Times, and Will Sullivan, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"Today started early and it's been intense," Gitner said. "So far today we've had sessions on how to use Soundslides, microphones, how to write for narration, and learned about the power of sound. Julie Jones from the University of Oklahoma and Rob Rosenthal from the Salt Workshops are doing a session on how to narrate a slideshow or video because we've learned that narration is sometimes a needed part of a story."

Gitner said that the assignments students drew blindly from a hat were confirmed local stories researched and framed by Las Vegas Sun staff members, and that tonight participants will received their Canon video and still camera gear and instruction on how to use it before starting on their assignments.

A long list of talented, award-winning photojournalists and multimedia producers and developers are working at the seminar as coaches, including professionals from some of the country's largest and most successful newspapers and networks. The personalized training has a very low student-to-teacher ratio, with about 25 coaches for 50 students. At the workshop's conclusion, students will receive a certificate acknowledging the specific training provided by NPPA.
