ATHENS, OH (June 1, 2009) – The 2009 "Soul Of Athens" went live a 6 a.m. this morning, an annual award-winning multimedia photojournalism project that attempts to answer the question "What is the 'soul' of Athens and its surrounding area?"
Produced by students at Ohio University's School of Visual Communication, along with some students from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, this third edition of the project involves more than 50 photographers, designers, Web developers, and writers, and it was executive produced by NPPA member Terry Eiler, a photojournalism professor and VisCom's director. Senior producers included VisCom associate director and NPPA member Stan Alost, Ans Bradford, Alysia Burton, Brandon Flayler, Francis Gardler, Jennifer Poggi, Carrie Pratt, Lou Spirito, and Charlie Zimkus. Eiler and Alost annually coordinate judging of the picture editing categories in NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism competition.
While last year's "Soul Of Athens" had the topic of wellness in Athens County, this year the project returned to its original question about discovering the "soul" of Athens.
Last year the "Soul Of Athens" won third place in the NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism compeition in the "News or Feature Multimedia Package catetory, and won an Award of Excellence for online publications in the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International contest.
