Danbury Photojournalist David Harple, 48
DANBURY, CT (July 27, 2009) – David W. Harple, the chief photographer of the News-Times who worked to document the community for more than 26 years, fought a rare type of kidney cancer for five years before it took his life on Saturday. He was 48.
Concerned coworkers and friends had started a financial fund online seeking donations to help support the costs of chemotherapy and extended treatments, which had created stress for his family over the last few years as he battled the cancer as it spread to his back and lungs. Those wishing to donate can do so through the Web site, www.harplefamilyfund.com, or via U.S. mail.
Harple is survived by his wife, Beth; a son, Nathaniel, and a daughter, Kathryn.
One of Harple's former coworkers and friends, Paul Steinmetz of Western Connecticut State University, wrote a blog entry, Remembering Dave Harple, about the photojournalist, who had continued working at the paper during the time he fought the cancer.
The photographer first joined NPPA in 1982. No plans for services have been announced yet.
