Photographers In Big San Diego Union-Tribune Layoff

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 14, 2009) – Four photojournalists, including one of the newspaper's last picture editors, were among the 112 employees let go this week during a second round of layoffs at the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Picture editor and photographer David Poller, along with photographers Laura Embry, Rick Nocan, and Yvette de la Garza were among the undisclosed number of newsroom employees, including reporters, editorial page and opinion writers, and Web and print designers, who were told Wednesday that they were part of the Union-Tribune's "reduction and realignment of staffing levels."

In May, 192 jobs were cut when the paper was sold to Platinum Equity, a Beverly Hills-based investment firm that last week was reported to have made a $35 million offer to buy the Boston Globe from The New York Times Co.

Also this week, more than 25 percent of the Journal News newsroom staff in Westchester, NY, were laid off at the Gannett publication. One of those cut in the 50 jobs eliminated was Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Matt Davies.
