OU's Ryan Henriksen Wins College Photographer Of The Year

 

COLUMBIA, MO (November 13, 2009) – Ohio University photojournalism student Ryan Henriksen has been named the 64th College Photographer of the Year in the annual competition that wrapped up Friday at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Henriksen's photography was awarded the gold in the CPOY portfolio category and silver in the sports portfolio category.

The Ohio University student is a photojournalism major scheduled to graduate with a BA next year, and he's a Brooks Institute of Photography graduate with an associate degree in June 2007. Henriksen interned at The Virginian-Pilot last summer, and he was a student this year at the Eddie Adams Workshop Barnstorm XXII.

Maisie Crow of Ohio University is the runner-up CPOY, with a silver award in the portfolio category.

OU students dominated the contest with first place wins in multiple categories. OU's Brad Vest won gold in the Spot News category, and Yanina Manolova of OU won gold in the feature category. OU's Drew Angerer won gold in sports action, while OU's Diego James Robles won gold in sports feature. OU's Andrew Burkle won first place in the illustration category, and OU's Dan Krauss won gold in the domestic picture story category.

Tim Hussin of the University of Florida, the CPOY winner in 2008, won gold in both the portrait and pictorial categories, and Bharat Choudhary of the University of Missouri won gold in the international picture story category.

Alex Welsh of San Francisco State University won gold in the documentary category, and SFSU's Michael Mullady won gold in general news. Joshua A. Bickel of the University of Missouri won gold in the sports portfolio category.

Students form the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill won gold, silver, bronze, and also award of excellence in the large group multimedia project category, dominating the division. The first place in the individual multimedia story category was also won by a UNC student, Jose Corbella. And UNC students Nacho Corbella, Eileen Mignoni, Zach Ferriola-Bruckenstein and Chris Carmichael won gold in the multimedia project category.

The CPOY contest was founded by Cliff and Vi Edom in 1945. The University of Missouri administers the contest with support from its co-sponsor, Nikon Inc. The National Press Photographers Foundation administers the Colonel William J. Lookadoo and the Milton Freier Memorial Awards in conjunction with the contest.

This year's CPOY judges were freelance photojournalist Nicole Frugé, formerly of the San Antonio Express-News; Seth Gitner, an assistant professor of journalism at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University; Barry Locher, former managing editor at The State Journal-Register in Springfield, IL; Lara Solt, a staff photographer for The Dallas Morning News; and Zach Wise, a multimedia producer for The New York Times.
