NPPA Launches Free iPhone Application On Apple's iTunes

DURHAM, NC (December 18, 2009) – The National Press Photographers Association's first iPhone and iPod Touch application is now available for free at Apple's iPhone App Store.

"We are very excited to get this first App out and available to members and the public alike," NPPA executive director Jim Straight said today.

"With this new access point, our members can get the best industry news while they're on the go, and we can also get visual journalism into the spotlight beyond just the industry's insiders. Apple's App Store obviously has tremendous exposure, especially in the photography category, and I think this will open up visual journalism to a whole new audience."

Straight says NPPA has plans for additional iPhone Apps. "This is the first in a series, with the next variations focusing on some specific features of our Web site," Straight said. "Developer Greg Anderson and Donald Winslow did a great job in developing this new App, and we're excited to see what comes next."

NPPA's first iPhone App is online now on iTunes at http://itunes.com/apps/nppa.

The NPPA iPhone App allows users to view a live feed of news stories from NPPA's Web site as well as access many of NPPA's most popular member features and services. In addition to news stories and the interface with www.nppa.org, users can access member services, NPPA's calendar of upcoming workshops, seminars, and educational events, and the organization's monthly and yearly contests and professional development opportunities.

Through the NPPA App users can also reach NPPA features such as "Find A Photographer" and NPPA's online professional mentoring program for student photojournalists.

NPPA's first iPhone and iPod Touch App was developed by Anderson, a senior software systems engineer for The Seattle Times, who also developed the Times' iPhone App and news reader.

NPPA's iPhone App is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Advertising banners displayed on NPPA's iPhone App are managed by The Townsend Group of Bethesda, MD, the advertising agency for NPPA's monthly magazine, News Photographer. Established by Holly Townsend in 1983, NPPA's national advertising sales and sponsorships are managed by Townsend's Stephanie Holland.
