U.S. Copyright Czar Seeks Public Comments

WASHINGTON, DC (February 24, 2010) – The government's new copyright enforcement czar is seeking public comments and recommendations as the Obama administration develops a new plan to tackle an intellectual property infringement enforcement strategy, and the National Press Photographers Association will be responding to the request.

This new effort is mandated by the Intellectual Property Act of 2008, which created in the President's office the new position of Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC).

Copyright czar Victoria A. Espinel, the IPEC for the Office of Management and Budget in the Executive Office of the President, is seeking public comments and recommendations in two specific areas.

In the first, Espinel seeks written submissions from the public regarding the costs to the U.S. economy from intellectual property violations, and the threats to public health and safety created by infringement.

In the second, recommendations are requested from the public about the objectives for improving the government's intellectual property enforcement efforts.

All comments and recommendations are to be submitted online by writing to intellectualproperty@omb.eop.gov by the deadline of 5 p.m. EST on March 24, 2010.

Submissions filed in response to the IPEC request will be posted on the Internet for public review, so any confidential or sensitive or proprietary information should not be included in a submission.

NPPA's Advocacy Committee will be submitting prepared comments and recommendations in the next few days. NPPA members are also encouraged to submit suggestions to the Advocacy Committee by sending their thoughts in an email to advocacy@nppa.org.
