Denver Post, The Herald & Sports Illustrated Win BOP's Best Use Of Photography

ATHENS, OH (April 6, 2010) – Tim Rasmussen and The Denver Post have won the Best Use Of Photography category for newspapers with 75,000 circulation or over in NPPA's 2010 Best Of Photojournalism competition the judges announced today, and Justin Rumbach and The Herald in Jasper, IN, have won the Best Use title for newspapers with circulation less than 75,000.
And the Best Use Of Photography category for Magazines was won by Jim Colton and Sports Illustrated.
Runner-up to the Denver Post in the newspaper category is Michele McNally and The New York Times, and third place is Bruce Moyer and the St. Petersburg Times.
Runner-up to The Herald in the newspaper category is Ryan Wood and the Midland (Mich.) Daily News, and third place is Rob Romig and the Register-Guard. Honorable mention was awarded to Clyde Mueller and the Santa Fe New Mexican.
Runner-up in the Magazine category is Carol Nakagawa and The Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest magazine.
The Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year (Individual) was won by Brad Loper of The Dallas Morning News. Second place is Ryan Wood of the Midland (Mich.) Daily News, and third place is Bruce Moyer of the St. Petersburg Times. Honorable mentions were awarded to Mary Vignoles of the Los Angeles Times, Ken Lyons of The Denver Post, and Martin Smith-Rodden of The Virginian-Pilot.
The Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year (Team) top honor was awarded to the Los Angeles Times picture editing staff and assistant managing editor Colin Crawford. Second place is The Denver Post staff of assistant managing editor Tim Rasmussen and Ken Lyons, John Sunderland, Reza Marvashti, Meghan Lyden, and Eric Lutzens. Third place is The Herald and photography editor Justin Rumbach and editor John Rumbach. Honorable mentions were awarded to the St. Petersburg Times, The Virginian-Pilot, and The Dallas Morning News.
The Magazine Picture Editor of the Year honors were awarded to .týždeň magazine's Robert Csere and Vladimira Pcolova. Runner-up is Newsweek's Amy Pereira, and third place is Mother Jones magazine's Mark Murrmann. And an honorable mention was awarded to Newsweek's James Wellford.

In the Multiple-page Newspaper Documentary Photojournalism Project category there was a tie for first place. Top honors went to The Denver Post for "Ian Fisher: An American Soldier" and to The Dallas Morning News for "Choosing Thomas." Second place is The Commercial Appeal and third place is the St. Petersburg Times. Honorable mentions were awarded to The Herald (2), the Naples Daily News, and The Denver Post.
In the Newspaper Recurring Feature or Series category, first place is the Naples Daily News for "Our World." Second place is The Denver Post, and third place is the San Jose Mercury News. Honorable mentions were awarded to The New York Times, the St. Petersburg Times, and the Los Angeles Times.
In the Multiple-Page News newspaper category, first place is the Los Angeles Times. Second place is the San Francisco Chronicle, and third place is The Virginian-Pilot. Honorable mentions were awarded to the Los Angeles Times (2) and The New York Times.
In the Single-Page News newspaper category, first place is The Virginian-Pilot for the photo feature "Eyewitness." Second place and third place were also won by The Virginian-Pilot. Honorable mentions were awarded to The Dallas Morning News, the Los Angeles Times, and The Virginian-Pilot.
In the Newspaper Special Section or Reprint category, first place is The Denver Post for "Style & Substance." Second place is the Los Angeles Times, and third place is The Palm Beach Post. Honorable mentions were awarded to The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.
In the Newspaper Illustrative Single Page category, first place is The Virginian-Pilot for "A Lost Boy Returns Home." Second place is The Palm Beach Post, and third place is the Los Angeles Times. Honorable mentions were awarded to The Virginian-Pilot, The Denver Post, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and the Midland (Mich.) Daily News.

In the Magazine Recurring Feature or Series category, first place is The Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest magazine. Second and third place were both won by Sports Illustrated.
In the Magazine Sports Story category, Sports Illustrated swept the competition with first, second, and third place wins.
In the Magazine Personality Profile or Lifestyle Story category, first place is .týždeň magazine. Second place is The Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest magazine, and third place is .týždeň. An honorable mention was also awarded to .týždeň.

The winners were picked during three days of judging the 2010 Best Of Photojournalism contest's picture editing categories at the contest's host site, Ohio University's School of Visual Communication (VisCom). This year's judges for the picture editing categories were Keith Jenkins, Geri Migielicz, and NPPA board member Ron Londen. The picture editing competition wrapped up during the Easter weekend, and it was coordinated by OU's VisCom assistant director and professor Stan Alost along with the assistance of VisCom students and volunteers and VisCom director Terry Eiler.
This year in the overall Best Of Photojournalism contest some 3,000 entrants from 147 countries submitted more than 50,000 still images, video, and Web entries.
NPPA's contest has remained a free contest with no entry fees since it's beginning.
In judging in earlier categories in March at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, FL, Emilio Morenatti was picked as the Photojournalist of the Year (Large Markets) in the still photography categories, and Greg Kahn of the Naples Daily News was picked as the Photojournalist of the Year (Small Markets). Barbara Davidson of the Los Angeles Times won Cliff Edom’s “New America Award,” and Getty Images’ Quinn Rooney won the Sports Photojournalist of the Year title.
Darren Durlach of WBFF-TV in Baltimore was picked as the Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year for the second year in a row, and Shawn Montano of KDVR-TV and KWGN-TV in Denver was named Video Editor of the Year in the television categories.
KARE-TV of Minneapolis was named the Station Of The Year (Large Markets), WAVY-TV of Portsmouth, VA, was picked Station Of The Year (Medium Markets), and KTUU-TV of Anchorage was namd Station Of The Year (Small Markets).
