Kalish Workshop Canceled For 2010

DURHAM, NC (April 26, 2010) – The board of directors for The Kalish have decided to cancel the workshop for 2010 due to a lack of applicants, it was announced today on the workshop's Web site.

"Challenging economic times have caught up with The Kalish. The workshop has been put on hold for a year," organizers said.

The deadline to apply for this year's workshop was approaching, on May 15. In past years The Kalish has seated more than several dozen participants per session, but as with many professional workshops the economic hardships that have burdened newspapers, magazines, and university programs recently have also taken a toll on workshop attendance.

The Kalish, generously hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, IN, is targeted toward visual editors who are, or who aspire to be, assignment editors, line editors, or producers. The workshop is named after Stan Kalish, who was an innovative Milwaukee Journal picture editor from 1937 until 1950.

"As we have in the past, The Kalish will continue to evolve," the directors said in their Web announcement. "We'll be back, and keep the faith."
