The National Press Photographers Foundation was founded in 1976 to improve and facilitate the administration of press photography, to promote the study of press photography and research therein and to continue the education of press photographers by publishing and distributing addresses, reports and other literary works on press photography subjects. Now the NPPF, a non-profit foundation with 501(c)(3) tax exemption under the IRS Code, is charged with advancing press photography in all its branches and awarding scholarships and fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in the field of photojournalism.
NPPF scholarship awards are given to encourage those who have talent and dedication to photojournalism and who need financial help to continue their studies. These awards are directed toward those who are already studying full time in college or who are returning to college to finish their formal education. One scholarship is reserved exclusively for a photojournalist pursuing an advanced degree. This scholarship program is administered by the National Press Photographers Foundation, a foundation associated with the National Press Photographers Association. Separately, the Foundation administers and funds the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop in June of each year, the Airborne TV Seminar in December and the Awards for Research in Photojournalism. The Foundation assists in funding the Flying Short Course and other educational programs. These programs are primarily aimed at those already in the profession. Program details and dates are publicized in News Photographer magazine.
All applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in a four-year college or university, or have been accepted at a four-year institution to complete suspended studies. Applicants must provide evidence of an aptitude for photojournalism as well as academic ability and financial need. A letter from a college instructor or intern supervisor would be highly supportive and strengthen an applicant's appeal. A person may apply for as many different scholarships as he or she chooses; however only one award will be granted. The award must be used at the beginning of the next semester.
Deadline
The deadline for all scholarships is March 1.
