Reid Blackburn Scholarship
This scholarship was established by The Columbian newspaper of Vancouver, WA, where Reid Blackburn was a staff photographer until his death on May 18, 1980. He was on assignment at Mount St. Helens when it erupted and took his life. Reid was 27 years old at his death and had been with The Columbian for five years. Reid graduated from Linfield College in Oregon with a degree in communications. He was known as a meticulous photographer. Steve Small, former photography editor for The Columbian, described Reid as "an old world craftsman one of those rare people who could combine superior technical skills with a deep sensitivity."

Specific Rules for this scholarship

Student must have completed one year at a recognized four-year college or university having courses in photojournalism and must be continuing in a program leading to a bachelor's degree, and must have at least one half year of undergraduate schooling remaining at time of award.

The philosophy and goals statement is particularly important in this selection.

Electronic Digital submissions should consist of a CD-ROM containing a folder of JPEG images (with the .jpg suffix) containing embedded cutline and byline information. An Abobe Acrobat .PDF format portfolio is also acceptable. All portfolios will be viewed on a Macintosh running OS X. A portfolio may also take the form of duplicate slides (submitted in a normal 8x10" plastic slide sheet) or 8x10" prints. All entries will include at least one picture story as well as individual photographs. All portfolios must be accompanied by a typed sheet of clearly arranged captions.
