NPPF Scholarship Applications & Rules

Applications

These files require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print.

  1. A portfolio is required with each application. For photographers: six pictures (one a story, plus five singles). For picture editors: three unmounted tear sheets. (See rules for digital entries below.)
  2. Students may enter more than the required number of six pictures. A contact sheet may be useful in judging shooting habits and discipline. But entering too many pictures may work against the applicant. The intent is to keep entry easy and inexpensive.
  3. For picture portfolios, slide duplicates are preferred. Please insert them in full-page plastic sleeves.
  4. Mark applicant's name clearly on each page of the application and on back of prints or on slide margins.
  5. Do not expect any entry material to be returned. So do not mount prints; do not send original slides, but rather inexpensive dupes.
  6. Caption information for the prints or slides is very useful and could be critical. But keep it concise.
  7. The school of the applicant's choice must be in the United States or Canada.
  8. The scholarship award must be used at the beginning of the next semester. Otherwise it will be forfeited and given to an alternate. (Exception is the NPPF Television News Scholarship, which may be received and used at the completion of the student's final semester.)
  9. All material must be postmarked not later than March 1.
  10. A student may apply for more than one scholarship, but may receive only one NPPF scholarship in a given year.

Digital Entry Rules: You may choose to enter a digital portfolio. No more than 20 photos--each must be a JPEG image, titled, placed in a folder (labeled with the applicant's name) and saved to a ZIP disk or burned to a CD. Write your name on the ZIP disk or CD. Each image must be scanned at 200 dpi with a maximum entry size of 9 inches. Caption information should be in Photoshop's 'Get Info.' Label photo stories sequentially, i.e. photo story 1, etc. The written application form must accompany the digital entry. No entry will be returned without a stamped self-addressed envelope.

Some scholarships have additional rules of entry. Be sure to check the page for your scholarship of interest.
