As the Dir. Of Photography at KARE-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota I get to be a journalist, storyteller, and manager. The staff I’m lucky enough to lead has twice been runner-up NPPA SOY and won the NPPA SOY award three times while I’ve been at the helm. I’m a 4-time NPPA reg. POY and an NPPA Nat. runner-up POY. Another proud achievement is being a Poynter Institute Ethics Fellow in 2007.
The roots of my accomplishments and work ethic come from my roots growing up on the family farm in Ulysses, Kansas. I graduated from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, a small college that has produced some talented colleagues who have worked with the likes of Larry Hatteburg and Steven Speilgberg.
I’ve worked throughout the Midwest in Kansas City, Mo., Topeka, Ks., and Great Bend, Kansas. Despite looking like I’m in middle school, I’ve been in the business for almost 20 years.
I love my work, however, I understand that it’s just important to have a life. I’m married to Mary, my lovely wife of 15 years and together we have two really cool and rambunctious sons.
If I had a motto to live by, it would be “Do what you love and love what you do.”
