March 16-21st, 2008
Plan on being in Norman, Oklahoma, by Sunday morning. We recommend that you arrive on Saturday. All people attending the Workshop must check in between 9 AM and noon on Sunday March 16th at the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education (OCCE) Forum building at 1704 Asp Ave in Norman, Oklahoma. Check-in for the Hands on Avid session is at 8 AM on Friday, March 14th.
You'll either fly into Will Rogers World Airport or drive directly to the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education (OCCE) on the University of Oklahoma campus via Interstate 35. OCCE is a 30 minute drive from the Oklahoma City airport. The Workshop begins promptly at 1:00 pm on Sunday and will end at noon on Friday. (We hope you won't have to leave early. You should be able to catch a 3:00 pm flight with no problem.)
Rent a car if your budget allows, however Norman is not Los Angeles and your Workshop experience won't be significantly affected if you don't have your own transportation. The Oklahoma Center for Cintinuing Education is in Norman, approximately 20 miles from the Oklahoma City airport. A local company offers economical limo service between the airport and OU. Workshop classrooms, housing, and dining facilities are all within walking distance of each other. If you are shooting, you will find a car useful (but not mandatory) for going out on assignments.
Housing arrangements are your responsibility. Your tuition does not cover lodging.
There are a number of motels to choose from within three miles of the Norman, Oklahoma Campus.
Pack a variety of casual clothing. Oklahoma weather in March can be anything from the sunny 70's to cloudy and cool. It has never snowed during a Workshop and we've only had a few tornadoes.
Participants enrolled in one of the 'Shoot & Edit' slots must bring their own professional video camera. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own portable editing systems. There will be a limited number of non linear edit systems on site. Firewire input is essential when using these systems. Other equipment includes a light kit and tripod, a battery-powered portable light and a camera rain cover. Don't forget to pack a battery charger and three or four field cassettes.
Non-shooting participants are encouraged to bring a short reel of their own work (two stories, under five minutes) on VHS for an individual critique session.
In addition to tuition, your budget should reflect the cost of lodging, meals and travel. We regret that NPPA cannot accept government payment vouchers; registration for military personnel is the same as for civilians. A check, money order or credit card authorization must accompany all applications. Due to the Workshop's popularity, NPPA reserves the right to allocate 'Shoot & Edit' slots as necessary. At past workshops many attendees who were unable to win a shooting slot reported discovering they preferred not shooting because the pressure to perform was off. Remember that, except for not having your daily efforts critiqued by the faculty, the learning experience is just as beneficial.
