Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a nonprofit organization established to provide medical care in third-world countries. But since the need for free or affordable health care has become so high in the United States, over half of RAM's free clinics are now held in the U.S. At the Wise County Virginia fairgrounds this summer, RAM provided close to 3,000 people in one weekend with free medical care. Desperate for this care, people drove hundreds of miles and waited for hours, even days, sleeping in their cars and tents outside the fairgrounds gate. Still, at the end of the weekend, some had to be turned away. Most of these people would go without this vital care if it were not for RAM; they simply could not afford it. A family sleeps in their car after arriving in the early morning hours, hoping to be among those admitted on the final day of the clinic. Because of the high volume of people in search of free medical care, hundreds arrive the night before each day of the clinic, sleeping in the parking lot outside of the fairgrounds gate. Some who have spent the entire day waiting at the clinic, have to spend the night again because they were not able to be seen before it closed down for the day.
