Marcus Yam of the Los Angeles Times has won Photographer of the Year and Matt Gade of The Daily Republic in Mitchell, South Dakota has won Sports Photographer of the Year in the 74th Annual Pictures of the Year International competition.
The winners have not been publicly announced by name, but their winning images are on the POYi website. Judging for the contest at the Missouri School of Journalism continues through Feb. 23 with the visual editing division.
Yam won with a portfolio that included a photo storieson raging wildfires, the election night reaction to Hillary Clinton’s loss and the protests against Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. Yam has won a Pulitzer Prize as part of the Los Angeles Times staff covering the San Bernardino shootings in 2015. In 2014, he was part of The Seattle Times team that also earned a Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Reporting.
Gade’s sports portfolio from his small-market coverage beat out second- and third-place photographers from Getty for the top prize. His portfolio featured college sports coverage and a photo story on rodeo in South Dakota. He is also the NPPA MNCC Central Region Photographer of the Year for 2016.
