ATHENS, GA (November 17, 2020) – Oliver Janney and Ross Taylor have been elected to the board of directors for the National Press Photographers Association in this year's elections. They will take office on January 1, 2021, and will be officially sworn-in during NPPA’s annual board meeting in February. They have been elected to serve three-year terms.
Oliver Janney is the Senior Field Production Manager at CNN DC and a current member of the NPPA’s National Board of Directors. Oliver is passionate about helping to tell impactful, memorable stories. His news philosophy is, “our jobs as journalists are to serve our viewers and the story, and we act in service of them – not the paycheck.” Oliver has served as a mentor through the NPPA mentor program and serves as a sponsored faculty member at the NPPA TV News Video Workshop, which he first attended in 2004 as a participant. He has also presented at the Northern Short Course and the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.
Oliver lives in Pasadena, Maryland, with his wife and two dogs. When he’s not neck-deep in the news demands of the day, he enjoys fishing, key lime pie and smoking meats.
Ross Taylor is also a current member of the Board of Directors. He is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Previously, he was a visiting professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the inaugural fellow in the Multimedia, Photography and Design Department at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University. His professional recognitions include Photographer of the Year (Large Markets), Northern Photographer of the Year, NPPA’s Region One Photographer of the Year, Virginia Photographer of the Year and North Carolina Photographer of the Year (twice). His coverage of an Afghanistan trauma hospital garnered numerous international and national awards, and his work has also appeared on the cover of the Best of Photojournalism Magazine (twice). A documentary film he recently completed, “The Hardest Day,” has been admitted into ten film festivals nationally, including the Phoenix Film Festival.
In addition to these board seats, three regional chair positions were filled.
Barbara Perenic in the Midwest; Julia Robinson in the South; Ben Gray in the Southeast.
In the coming weeks, the newly elected regional chairs will appoint associate chairs. They will also officially take office on January 1.
