Friends of photographer Ken Regan reported today that the photojournalist died Sunday night in a New York hospital after a long battle with cancer. In the 1970s, Regan founded his own picture agency, Camera 5, and he covered news and sports around the world for the biggest magazines.
From politics to prizefights, “His pictures were sparkling, his laugh lengendary,” friend David Burnett said. Kenneth Jarecke said, “A wonderful guy and a great photographer. Ironically, his friends The Rolling Stones are starting a new tour and outlasted him. Who would have guessed?”
In 2011, Regan was interviewed by GQ magazine and he talked about the behind-the-scenes life of his rock and roll photography. The story is online here.
Few knew he was ill, Dirck Halstead said, and Regan was shooting assignments as recently as six weeks ago. See some of Regan’s other outstanding photographs in his Web portfolio here.
