Sweden's Paul Hansen Wins POYi's Newspaper Photographer Of The Year

COLUMBIA, MO  – Judges at the 67th annual Pictures of the Year International contest have picked photographer Paul Hansen of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter as the Newspaper Photographer of the Year during ongoing judging at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Mads Nissen of Denmark's Berlingske Tidende won second place, and Craig F. Walker of The Denver Post won third.

Freelancer Stephanie Sinclair won POYi's Community Awareness Award for her essay "Polygamy In America," and Los Angeles Times photojournalist Barbara Davidson won special recognition for "Frozen Land, Forgotten People."

Still photography judges on this year's POYi panel include photojournalist Kathy Anderson, formerly of the Times-Picayune in New Orleans; Scott Mc Kiernan of ZUMA Press; Chicago Tribune photojournalist Scott Strazzante, AFP's Pedro Ugarte; freelancer Pablo Corral Vega; photojournalist Donna DeCesare of the University of Texas at Austin; freelancer Lynn Johnson, and Søren Pagter of the Danish School of Media and Journalism.

POYi still photography judging continues through Friday February 26, and the multimedia and editing divisions will be judged from Sunday February 28 though Friday March 5.
