Austin Center For Photography Closing

AUSTIN, TX (March 19, 2014) – After only five years, the Austin Center for Photography has announced that it is shutting down.

The following eMail was sent to ACP supporters and members at midnight Central time on Tuesday:

Dear ACP members, supporters and friends -

It is with heavy hearts that the Austin Center for Photography announces we are closing our doors after five wonderful years.

For several years our membership renewals, sponsorships and grant revenues have not covered the full cost of running the organization.  Over the past year we attempted creative, collaborative, and sustainable ways to continue our mission, but unfortunately, these efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful.  In the end, we have made the extremely difficult but responsible choice to close.

We will complete our 2013-14 season as planned, and hope you will take the opportunity to join us for every one of these events. Help us celebrate the amazing community and quality programs that ACP had been known for as we go out on a high note with our 20th and final Icon of Photography in June.

•    Color: American Photography Transformed – discussion & book signing with John Rohrbach on March 20 at the Contemporary Austin

•    Kenny Braun’s Surf Texas – discussion & book signing with the photographer on May 7 at the Contemporary Austin

•    Blog/Reblog – exhibition at Big Medium opening May 23

•    Icon No. 20 - Martin Parr on June 24 at the Blanton Auditorium

Special thanks go to the incredible, hard-working leaders and founding members who created and sustained ACP for so long.  We owe each of you a debt of gratitude for your contributions and we honor what you began five years ago.

Thank you to every single one of you who became a member or became a regular guest at our events.  We wouldn’t have been here without you.

Finally, a special thanks to our friends at the Harry Ransom Center for fulfilling ACP membership privileges through 2014 (details in the FAQs).

As the trustees of the Austin Center for Photography, it has been a privilege to serve you.  We hope the tradition of coming together around great photography will continue in Austin well into the future.

We look forward to seeing you all soon at our final ACP events -- and at whatever photographic gatherings the future holds.
