NPPA President Katie Schoolov, left, swears in new board members, Victoria Sanchez and Oliver Janney on April. 3, 2021.
Athens, GA. - We are excited to announce that the board elected Oliver Janney as the new Vice President during a special board meeting on Saturday, April 3. Janney is the Senior Field Production Manager at CNN DC and he teaches on the faculty of NPPA’s News Video Workshop in Norman, Oklahoma.
“It’s an honor to serve as the Vice President of our cherished association. We all have stories about how the NPPA has helped us individually and I am no exception. I look forward to the important work ahead to ensure that the NPPA sustains and grows stronger from our already solid foundation in partnership with President Schoolov, the Board of Directors, our dedicated volunteers and our exceptionally talented staff,” said Janney.
Janney (bio below) was first elected to the board last year after filling a previous vacancy. Because he ran uncontested in the November election, the board of directors was charged with filling the vacancy with an individual from the video discipline.
After interest from multiple candidates and robust discussion, the board elected Victoria Sanchez to the seat. Sanchez (bio below) is the health reporter at WJLA in Washington, DC, where she still utilizes her skills from past years as an MMJ to gather additional footage for her daily stories and still photos for online photo galleries.
“The NPPA family includes an impressive list of visual journalists. I’m honored to serve on the Board of Directors. I look forward to helping expand the reach of storytelling in newsrooms across the country by encouraging reporters and photojournalists alike to share their voices in this wonderful organization,” said Sanchez.
The board also unanimously passed a resolution adjusting the membership options. We are pleased to announce a new discounted three-year membership option and two-year student option, for dedicated NPPA members who wish to save time and money by renewing less frequently. The resolution also adjusted membership classifications to reflect the recent changes to News Photographer.
The board also heard updates from the 75th Anniversary Task Force, which is busy designing special merchandise for the occasion that will go on sale in coming months. Finally, the board discussed the upcoming webinars in NPPA’s Master Your Craft series with Sony and Canon and exciting plans for more manufacturers to join the schedule soon.
Oliver Janney is the Senior Field Production Manager at CNN DC and a current member of the NPPA’s National Board of Directors.
Oliver is passionate about helping to tell impactful, memorable stories. His news philosophy is, “our jobs as journalists are to serve our viewers and the story, and we act in service of them – not the paycheck.” Oliver has served as a mentor through the NPPA mentor program and serves as a faculty member at the NPPA TV News Video Workshop, which he first attended in 2004 as a participant. He has also presented at the Northern Short Course and the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.
Oliver lives in Pasadena, Maryland with his wife and two dogs. When he’s not neck-deep in the news demands of the day or the business of the NPPA, he enjoys fishing, key lime pie and creating culinary delights – preferably on a grill or in a smoker.
Victoria Sanchez is the health reporter at WJLA in Washington, DC after previous stints as a reporter at KUSA in Denver and an anchor and MMJ in Santa Barbara, CA. She is a dedicated journalist and a proactive storyteller who enterprises daily stories and incorporates engaging live shots. She believes that being a good newsroom citizen helps create a positive working environment that lends itself to excellent newscasts and creative content.
Victoria is also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
Since news never sleeps, neither does Victoria. (At least not a lot.) When not working, she loves to spend time with her husband and daughter cooking and baking. Fun facts: Victoria was on the Price is Right while in college at the University of Southern California, she went skydiving once (and that was enough) and she enjoys training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
