•Enter Best of Photojournalism through Jan. 31
•Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras, up to $1,000 to top winners
•Membership discount extended through Jan. 30
The National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism Contest (BOP) is now open for entries through Jan. 31.
Sony Electronics, manufacturer of the Alpha series of mirrorless cameras, is a Platinum Level sponsor of BOP 2019. With this support, NPPA is offering significant cash and camera prizes to top portfolio winners, and Tiffany crystal awards for winning newsrooms. Sony Alpha cameras will be awarded to the top still photography portfolios as well as the Sony Best of Show-Video winner, and the Best of Show-Stills winner. Cash prizes range from $500 to $1,000.
“Sony is proud to be the Platinum Sponsor of NPPA BOP and look forward to all the entries from still to video,” Samantha Corn said. Corn is a Senior Business Development Manager and Education, Digital Imaging Division, Sony Electronics Inc.
A new entry submission and judging system are in place to streamline the entry experience, thanks to BOP’s new host institution, the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The system will also give contest administrators and judges more immediate access to entries after the deadline. The BOP Committee has reviewed all of the categories, updating them to better reflect trends in the industry, providing more opportunities for those in small markets and those new to the profession.
“BOP’s purpose is to celebrate and elevate the very best visual journalism in the world. These technological improvements to our contest and this sponsor support will make this a really valuable and exciting experience for entrants,” NPPA president Michael P. King said. “I’m ecstatic that Sony has chosen to support NPPA and the stunning journalism our members and entrants create on a daily basis.”
Sony will also be the exclusive camera manufacturer sponsor of a new awards ceremony/public conference for the Stills, Editing and Online Video, Presentation and Innovation divisions to be held in late spring. The 2019 NPPA Video Awards have already been planned to be held in conjunction with the West Coast Workshop in early June in San Diego.
“This generous support by Sony will allow us to take BOP, with its great history and reputation, and fulfill our mission of educational outreach as well as support and raise the profile of our winners,” said William Snyder, BOP director. “Sony’s sponsorship for the awards ceremony/public conference is so important because it gives BOP winners the opportunity to present their work and talk with the general public at a time when many don’t understand the kind of quality, ethics, and compassion that we bring to the stories we tell.”
NPPA strongly encourages all BOP entrants to carefully read through the Guidelines and Category descriptions, available in the menu bar along the top of the new entry website, before preparing your entries.
If you have entered in the past, you will find some significant changes in the descriptions, technical standards, and how many entries are allowed as part of your overall submission – especially in the Video Divisions.
Each entrant may have up to 20 entries spread across any combination of categories and divisions – Still Photojournalism, Picture Editing, Online Video, Presentation and Innovation, Video Photojournalism and/or Video Editing. This 20-entry limit applies to all disciplines and all entrants, including the Video Photojournalism and Video Editing divisions.
A single photograph or video may not be entered on its own in more than one division. However, a video may be entered in both a single category and as part of a portfolio or compilation, and a photo may be entered in a single category, as part of a picture story, or as part of a portfolio. However, each instance counts as one towards the 20-entry limit.
For those entering the Video Division’s Editor of the Year category, the most significant change is that the stories required for this category are no longer required to be entered individually, but they can be entered individually in those categories if you wish. This means an entry in this category will only count as one entry towards the 20-entry total.
NPPA members can enter BOP 2019 for free as a benefit of membership. Non-members may enter with a $75 fee, or avoid the fee by becoming a member.
A limited-time membership discount has been extended through 11:30 PM, Jan. 30, 2019, allowing professionals to join or renew their memberships for $125, and students to join or renew for $55.
Some categories in BOP are “team entries” or allow multiple names on the entry. At least one of the team members or named entrants must be an NPPA member or have paid the entry fee. The entry must be submitted by this person.
“With a smooth entry process, monetary awards, and equipment prizes, BOP is a must-enter contest,” Snyder said.
