DURHAM, NC (December 12, 2013) – Renowned as “the contests designed for photojournalists by photojournalists,” and incorporating the many facets of the visual journalism industry, NPPA's Best of Photojournalism competitions attract the most talented professionals in Still, Video, Multimedia, and Editing, year after year.

The National Press Photographers Association is delighted to announce that all four 2014 Best of Photojournalism competitions will open for entry on Friday, January 3, 2014.

The entry deadline for the Best of Photojournalism Still, Picture Editing, and Multimedia competitions will be Friday, January 31, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. EST (UTC/GMT -5 hours).

The entry deadline for the Best of Photojournalism Video division will be Friday, January 24, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. EST (UTC/GMT -5 hours).

Entry is once again free to all participants. And you'll be able to enter and view your contest submissions online.

Revered as “an annual celebration of international excellence, in all forms of photojournalism and visual reportage,” the contest underwent significant reorganization in 2012. Improvements such as ease of entry, category revisions and additions, and choosing winners using a combination of both online and on-site judging will highlight the changes for the entire contest's 12th year.

During the early rounds of the four contests more than 40 experts from around the world will be used as professional crowd-source judges to insure fairness and a broad-based selection. The final selection of winners in each contest will be juried live by a fresh group of working professionals who will be brought together for the final selection.

The Best of Photojournalism Contest Committee is led by Terry Eiler, professor emeritus at  Ohio University's School of Visual Communication (VisCom). The Best of Photojournalism committee and organizing team includes associate professor Stan Alost, who is now the interim director of VisCom; Sherman Williams of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice; former Sports Illustrated photography editor James Colton; ZUMA Press founder Scott Mc Kiernan; Merry Murray of KSNW-TV; and Regina McCombs of Minnesota Public Radio.
