(ATHENS, GA) The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and the National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF) are proud to announce that the Democracy Fund and First Look Media have each donated $10,000 in support of our legal advocacy and educational work, replacing a rescinded pledge from Sinclair Broadcast Group.
“Democracy Fund believes that a free and independent press is critical to a healthy democracy,” said Estizer Smith of the Public Square Program at Democracy Fund. “Photographers are often on the front lines when news breaks and through them, we see our nation and our communities reflected back at us. We are honored to support this work.”
Democracy Fund and First Look Media to Provide $20,000 in Support
“First Look Media is honored to join Democracy Fund by stepping in to make up for the support withdrawn by Sinclair,” said Kate Myers, Deputy Director of the Press Freedom Defense Fund. “Photojournalists bring important news stories to life, inform the public and allow that public see the story for themselves. Their work needs to be supported and applauded, and we are proud to support the NPPA.”
This $20,000, along with the donations of approximately 140 individual donors and 11 universities and associations, add up to roughly $45,000 in new funds to replace Sinclair Broadcast Group’s rescinded $25,000 pledge to support our advocacy efforts.
“As the Voice of Visual Journalists, we are so grateful to Democracy Fund and First Look Media for their ongoing efforts to strengthen American democracy and support associations like ours that advocate for First Amendment freedoms,” said NPPA President Michael P. King.
Thanks also go to Charles Davis, dean at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, and to our volunteers and members who used their social media platforms and personal connections to solicit donations for our cause.
“NPPF is pleased to help fundraise and support NPPA’s vital legal outreach programs. Hundreds of visual journalists, law enforcement officers, and educators across the country have participated in workshops covering legal and ethical issues. Our successful campaign will extend the outreach including the latest in drone photography,” said Frank Folwell, NPPF treasurer.
No matter the amount given, our donors helped us prove that ethics matter, that NPPA/NPPF—not just promoting ethics, but living them—are worth supporting and that our mission is more important than ever.
