ATHENS, GA (July 10, 2017) - On Friday the family and friends of David Gilkey gathered in Portland, OR, to remember him … not as the war photographer, but as "David, the boy."

An accomplished and veteran conflict photographer, Gilkey and his translator were killed June 5 when Taliban forces attacked and shelled the Afghan special forces convoy carrying Gilkey and two other NPR journalists and their translator. Gilkey and Afghan journalist and translator Zabihullah Tamanna were killed in the attack.

NPPA member John Rudoff and reporter Natasha Rausch of The Oregonian covered the memorial service and their story and photographs are online here.
