DURHAM, NC (June 28, 2013) – Greg Smith has been named as the new NPPA Business Practices Committee chair, NPPA president Mike Borland announced today.
Smith replaces Matt Slaby, who has served as the chair since his appointment in September 2011 by NPPA's president at that time, Sean D. Elliot.
"I think Greg fits the needs of this committee perfectly," Borland said. "He'll take an active role in helping visual journalists make their independent careers successful." Currently Smith is also a member of NPPA's Board of Directors.
"The NPPA needs to bolster the resources available to photographers as newspapers cut staff and as television newsrooms combine. There is a demand for visuals of all kinds, and NPPA has members who can provide that content. Greg will help them make a living doing just that."
Borland added, "I want to thank Matt Slaby for his work over the last couple of years on the Business Blitz series of workshops."
The Business Practices Committee includes Avijit Gupta, David Banks, and NPPA's executive director Mindy Hutchison is the staff liaison to the committee.
NPPA has developed a number of sources to help visual journalists further their careers. These guides should be helpful for visual journalism students as well as seasoned photographers. The Business Practices Committee's resources are posted online here.
